The no-lawyer path in plain English
Getting divorced without a lawyer means you handle the court process yourself. You prepare documents, file with the court, arrange service or waiver where required, and follow the court process through final judgment.
- Start only after both spouses understand and agree to the important terms.
- Use a state-specific document packet instead of guessing from generic forms.
- Keep copies of every signed document, filing receipt, and court notice.
- Ask the clerk procedural questions when needed, but do not expect legal strategy advice from court staff.
